Summary:
The final page will leave you breathless.
When Kara Magari uncovers a secret door in the middle of the forest, she discovers (and trips through) a portal to a hidden world full of terrifying things: Ourea. She just wants to go home, but the natives have other plans for her. She clashes with immortal shapeshifters, is carried off by a dragon, nearly dies on several occasions, and somehow becomes the master of an ancient book of magic called the Grimoire. Every time she thinks she's safe, her new "friends" show their true colors.
Kara needs an ally, or she might not survive Ourea's monsters. She drops her guard when Braeden, a native soldier with a dark secret, vows to keep her safe. And though she doesn't know it, her growing attraction to him may just be her undoing.
For twelve years, Braeden Drakonin has lived a lie. The Grimoire is his one chance at redemption, and it lands in his lap when Kara Magari comes into his life. Though he begins to care for this stranded girl, there's something he wants more. He wants the Grimoire.
Welcome to Ourea, where only the cunning survive.

Hello everyone! Welcome to my tour stop for the Lichgates Blog Tour! As always, be sure to click the tour banner up above to check out all the other amazing stops!

Lichgates was a really crazy and enjoyable read that completely blew my expectations. I'll be honest and say that I wasn't too impressed with the cover, at least the one on the ebook format I received for review. My first impression was: Dang that's a lot of green. But the summary sounded interesting, so I decided to give the book a chance and sign up for the tour. I've been reading a lot of fantasy lately and I'm starting to hit a mini-slump. I wanted something that wasn't going to take hundreds of pages of development to get the real story and Lichgates gave that to me while still being a fantasy book.

The world of Ourea is nothing like I've ever read before. It's unique from the way you enter to its history and creature-kind. I am still in awe of how SM Boyce managed to pack so much in just one book. We start off with our main character Kara who stumbled through the lichgates and discovers the Grimoire which then transforms her into the Vagabond, the only person with the ability to control the Grimoire. She gets thrown into this crazy world where hostility is everywhere. Kara has to find a way to unite the broken world while finding ways to fix her own broken self.

Everything in the book was so vividly crafted and I promise I'm not saying this just because I'm part of a blog tour. This book was actually mind-blowing on so many levels. I read this on my computer and I could practically feel everything come to life in front of me. From Kara's vulnerabilities, to Braeden's strength, to Gavin's hatred. The world, the characters, and every single detail seemed to  resonate from the pages.

Okay, enough praise, let's get a little picky. Kara who you all know I already adore, did have her flaws. She had a habit of making mistakes over and over again, many which ended in tragedy. Every time, she was saved by only the sheerest of luck which didn't reflect her wisdom as the Vagabond. However, this is book one and she did just get thrown into a crazy world, so we can give her a break there. I will admit that she can be pretty easy to manipulate as can be seen through the first book.

Before I wrap things up, I want to briefly talk about the romance. I liked it, it wasn't overly sappy in the I need you and will die without you type of way, but it wasn't a predominantly important part of the book that I overlooked it most of the time. That being said, I'm still working on my feelings towards Braeden and Kara.

Overall, I did really enjoy this book and it helped pull me out of the little reading slump I was headed for. I know this book has some mixed reviews, but I think you should definitely check it out and see for yourselves!
