Five years.
That’s how long I’ve been gone. Since I left my best friend—the girl I loved—behind.
Five seconds.
That's how long it takes to realize I am completely, utterly, screwed. Because now that I’m back, my childhood crush has turned into so much more.
Rylee has changed. We both have. And now I’m drawn to her in a completely different way. To her smile. Her touch. To reliving old memories and making new ones. To the happiness she’s always given me that I haven’t felt since I left.
But her friends are hell-bent on keeping us apart. My dad is one drink away from destroying both of our lives, and maybe I am, too. It’s only a matter of time before I have to leave again, and there’s nothing I can do to stop it. I never get a choice.
The one choice I can make? Stay away from Rylee. Because if I don’t, I’ll break her heart—and mine—all over again.
Second chance stories are always the sweetest stories ever to read about. Rylee and Chase were inseparable as children but after Chase's parents get divorced, the two have lost touch until Chase returns. In both of their minds, staying apart is best but it's difficult when they were so close before he left. The novel explores the two of them getting to know each other and deciding what boundaries they must set and what boundaries they are willing to cross.

Rylee is the typical golden child with a good group of friends, good grades, and a bright future ahead. When her childhood best friend reenters the high school scene after disappearing for five years, she's unsure how to approach him. Her characteristics paint her as this perfect girl who has everything, but the story unfolds more about her than her outward appearances show. Her relationship with Chase is really heartfelt as she tries to decide if reestablishing a friendship with him is worth it.

Chase's story has a lot of depth and he is torn between being with Rylee who helps him face his demons and staying away because he doesn't want to hurt her. His parents separated when his father fell victim to alcohol and the novel follows him trying to rebuild the relationships around him.

The story focuses on Rylee and Chase as they attempt to navigate through the first stages of rebuilding their relationship. Rylee has a close group of friends who are willing to do anything to protect her. At times, it felt like they were being too defensive and hurtful but you see they are doing everything out of love and concern for their friend. In the end, they proved to be a really strong support group for Rylee and that's the important part.
3 out of 5 stars
