Entwined: Combined Review!

Entwined by Heather Dixon
ISBN: 978-0-06-200104-7
Pages: 472
Appearance:

Summary:
Come and mend your broken heart here.
Azalea is trapped. Just when she should feel that everything is before her . . . beautiful gowns, dashing suitors, balls filled with dancing . . . it's taken away. All of it.
The Keeper understands. He's trapped, too, held for centuries within the walls of the palace. And so he extends an invitation.
Every night, Azalea and her eleven sisters may step through the enchanted passage in their room to dance in his silver forest.
But there is a cost.
The Keeper likes to keep things.
Azalea may not realize how tangled she is in his web until it is too late.

Hey guys! This is our first combined review featuring Enchanted by Heather Dixon. Jenn was reading this book when I requested it from the library...I kinda forgot that we were reading the same book, but once I figured that out we decided that we should try a combined review. So here goes nothing. Expect a lot of “comments.”

Green: Riv
Pink: Jenn

Who’s your favorite character?
Wow Jenn...Definitely Bramble or Clover. Azalea I felt was too patronizing and confused after her Mother’s death that she fell into the Keeper’s trap. I love Bramble because she’s so fiery and audacious, it’s hard not to love her. Clover is just so CUTE. She’s so shy and soft spoken, but under the guidance of her love she blossoms into a beautiful girl. <3
Clover or Azalea...or Bramble….or maybe the twins….or maybe Lily cuz they’re cute :D SO HARD TO CHOOSE. Clover because I love how she’s so shy and sweet and stutters but stops for her love (aww….) I like how Bramble is head-strong and determined, just a natural-leader (perhaps even more so than her sister Azalea).  She’s also a trouble maker which is always...interesting to read.  In fact, during one holiday gala she lead all the children to hide behind a Christmas tree because they wanted to spy on the ball….hehe :D Azalea...Azalea, her leadership and deep love for her family makes it hard for her to choose what’s right and wrong, which I think makes her a realistic character (but Riv over here, obviously doesn’t agree with me, to each their own opinion, oh yea I went there)
(Oh okay girl, I see how it is)
I like how she takes charge of the situation, trying to keep her family together after her mother’s death, keeping true to her mother’s promise. LOYALTY!!

Why do you think the King had them grieve for such a long period of time?
Because his wife died? Jenn what question is this? STOP WRITING, you’re making me feel bad!!!! Stop being so philosophical!!!!! >.<
I think that the King was trying to show his respects to his wife and keep true to the grieving rituals of the time because the mother was very big with keeping promises, and love. Because the King is a guy, he probably didn’t understand that the best thing wouldn’t be to restrain the girls during their grieving period. Everyone knows what happens when you try to control someone, they rebel by dancing.

Do you think the ending was confusing?
It was a nice sweet ending, but the part before was like OMGAWD NOOO. That part was like getting bombarded with
I liked how the ending was so sweet with the weddings and the happy ending but the part before that was chaotic with all the stuff going on, so I’m not sure if that was intentional or not.

Do you think the Mother reappearing at the end was a little unreasonable?
I felt that Mother’s appearance was something I needed to pull everything together. I had pieced parts of the story and legend together after Keeper’s true identity was revealed, but I was still confused on some level, unlike Jenn who knows the ending cause she’s sooooo smart. XD Mother’s reappearance tied everything together and gave me a glimmer of hope that everything was going to alright.
I liked how she foreshadowed what might happen at the end. That it’s all going to be okay instead of being forever this chaotic and hopeless especially when the Keeper’s true identity is revealed.

Did you think the ending was cheesy?
A bit, I mean there is going to be three weddings, so three sisters get their happily ever after.
Nope not a bit...but I’m kinda a cheesy person….so I guess it is kinda
If that made any sense at all, please tell me :D

Do the think the Keeper was too unrealistic?
The Keeper’s personality was certainly very interesting. It wasn’t that he was unrealistic, the story is based off the legendary story of the Twelve Dancing Princesses so it’s open to as crazy and unrealistic as the author would like. But seriously, he creeps me out waaay too much
I think he was meant to be unrealistic because he’s kinda, strange, and unrealistic...that’s his entire personality.  So it was kinda expected to be interesting and unique given his circumstances and that they only see him at the pavilion because he’s trapped always struck me as strange.

Was the Keeper’s identity too predictable?
Again, Jenn is some physic hamster who can magically predict the ending and everyone’s secret identity. I had honestly no idea, call me gullible, but I totally bought the fact that he was just someone who got caught in the Old King’s curse. At most I would have thought that he was an enemy trying to get revenge.
I thought he was predictable, but that’s just me once again because I know Riv didn’t see it as predictable.  I just thought that because he seemed so mysterious and strange that it was kinda obvious there was something up with him. I mean what kind of person is forever trapped in a secret world with the name ‘Keeper,’ strange don’t you think?

Did you think there were too many characters?
Just a tad bit. I had a bit of trouble keeping track of all the characters, especially the suitors who all came to try to win the hand of Azalea. I mean, there were like 4-5 guys? The only guys I remember, are the guys mentioned in the next question, the King, and duh, the Keeper. I think the girls were a bit easier to remember since they all had some sort of a flower name and I knew the story was based off The Twelve Dancing Princesses.
Coming into the story I knew that there were going to be many characters involved simply because there are 12 daughters to start with so just a couple additional characters would start to confuse. The girls were relatively easy to remember because they all went in alphabetical order in order of birth and named after plants, but the suitors that came to impress Azalea...how many was that? like 4 or 5? So I completely forgot about those except when they were brought up repeatedly towards the end. Even though there were many girls, I liked how the author designed it so that each one (or at least the older ones) had a different personality. It shows diversity within the same family, which is kinda cool.

What’s your impression of Lord Teddie? Captain Bradford? Minister Fairweller?
Lord Teddie: Hilarious, very entertaining, think of him as a joker/fool at court. That might be a bit harsh, but he’s got that very clumsy personality that makes him very lovable. Oh! Like a teddy bear!
Captain Bradford: Ideal princely figure. Put any one of your “knights in shining armor” and I guarantee that he will fit the bill.
Minister Fairweller: First impression, “Dude you need some serious color in your life.” Then, seriously, LEARN TO FEEL! It’s not that hard really. After getting to know him better, I ship it. I ship it. (secretive smile)
I thought Lord Teddie was very funny especially since he is from another part of the world, so he has certain quirks about him that distinguishes him from the other suitors.  He is also quite clumsy and stumbles over himself a lot...both figuratively and literally.  Captain Bradford is the typical longed after romantic suitor. From the beginning I shipped him and Azalea together.  I mean he’s just so kind and caring, he fits perfectly with the family...why not? Minister Fairweller gave me mixed feelings because at the beginning he seemed so dull, like that suitor that is just so horrible and wrong for the girl, but then you start to get to know him and it’s just like...awww he’s so secretive and shy that it explains why he seems so different in public.

Who’s your OTP of the story? Azalea, Bramble, or Clover? (Spoiler on who gets married)
CLOVER or BRAMBLE
Clover is just so adorable and her man was so unexpected but I think it shows a lot of character growth. Yup, used some fancy English class terms right there!
Bramble on the other hand is such a fiery character, her love life is just fun to read about. Especially since I think the pairing is so adorable.
Why not Azalea? Well, I just think it was pretty obvious who she was going to end up with and the whole romance was too stereotypical with a damsel (kinda in stress) and a rescuer in shining armor.
I really liked Clover because she has such a shy personality and for her to be in love, out of all of them was so unexpected and sweet. She was the youngest of age, and yet she is one of the first to fall in love.  It shows how everyone deserves and can have true love (awww…)...so don’t give up hope :D

Describe your emotion during the crisis of the story?
WHAT IS GOING ON? First off I was really confused at everything, probably because I got scared and started skimming instead of paying attention to every detail which I do when I get really nervous about a plot. After re-reading and process, my emotion turned into: PLEASE NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!! (x300000) Dunno why I picked that number, but I pretty much started freaking out and went a bit insane with all the dramatics. XD
I was so confused because it was...chaotic and I often had to go back and reread, because I maybe skipped a couple parts because I wanted to know what was going to happen at the end. But then at the end when the keeper reappears I was like...gasp...nooo DON’T DO THIS KEEPER!! so scary...O.O

Other Comments?
Would definitely recommend, it was a really great read. I finished it relatively quickly. The magic and mystery is definitely a huge plus to the overall story and I absolutely love the twist it made on the Twelve Dancing Princesses tale. I do have to say that this put a really high expectation bar for future fairytale based books and I can’t wait to see if any book matches up to or beats Entwined’s twist. One last thing, if you guys like the story of the Twelve Dancing Princesses, I’ve heard of another series by Jessica Day George which is also based off that story. The first book is called Princess of the Midnight Ball. I’ve never read it, but it sounds interesting, in case anyone wants to try it out.
I definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to read it.  Even though it’s a really big book, it was a fast read because it is kinda a mystery novel, so I wanted to know what was going to happen next so I just kept reading and didn’t want to stop. I really like how this was originally based off of the Twelve Dancing Princesses which is what intrigued me in the first place to read it. The lyrical feel throughout the entire especially when describing the magic just made it a breeze to read. I really hope you try it!

So that was our combined review! This was pretty fun, if you have any suggestions in the future or books that you wish to have double or triple (if we can get Claudz to join us) let us know down below! Other than that, we’ll see you guys in our next review! Byeeeeee!

“You forgot my birthday, too."
"And mine."
The girls looked miserable. The King opened his mouth, then shut it.
"Sir!" whined Lord Teddie. "You forgot my birthday, too!"
Bramble gave a surprised laugh, then slapped her hand over her mouth, as though shocked at letting it out. The tension broke. The girls laughed sheepishly, and Lord Teddie beamed. He probably did not have many ladies think him funny. In fact, he probably got slapped by a lot of them.”

“What a rotten shilling punter!" said Bramble, tearing her bread to bits. "I can't believe he stole our things! Especially the watch! We stole that watch first, fair and square!”

“It looked like his ponytail had revolted against him," said Bramble.”

The King had no words as he strode to them. In an instant he had torn Fairweller away from Clover, wound up, and boxed Fairweller straight in the face.

"Oh, Mr. Bradford!" she said. "You're wonderful-oh-I could just kiss you!" Azalea immediately pulled back, the hot flush prickling to the very roots of her hair.

Shadowborn

Shadowborn by Moira Katson
ISBN: 484094670
Pages: 270
Appearance:

Summary:
It has been only two generations since Arthur Warden seized the throne of Heddred from the Conradines, and now the crown rests on the head of Garad, sickly and weak. Shadows gather: legacies of the centuries-long rivalries for power, old betrayals, the endless plots of the courtiers, and the murmur of rebellion in the southern provinces ...
Catwin, plucked from her life at the edge of the Kingdom, is thrust abruptly into the world of the Court when she is chosen by the Duke of Voltur to be a Shadow-spy, shield, and blade-to his niece, the Lady Miriel DeVere. The Duke's ruthlessness is legendary, and he will stop at nothing to become the power behind the throne, using Miriel as a pawn to catch Garad's heart. But the Duke's carefully-laid plans are only a piece of the intrigue of the court, and greater forces than Catwin can imagine are massed against her, determined to eliminate Miriel and impose a new order of their own. If Catwin and Miriel are to survive, they must learn quickly who to trust, and when to turn their skills against the very people who have trained them ...

Hey guys! I believe this is my third or fourth Amazon e-book review on here. Shadowborn, while it didn’t grab my attention right from the beginning, had a very compelling and provoking plot that kept me reading and before I knew it, I was finished. I have to admit, I did find some parts a bit dragging, but there was that constant desire to find out what happened, that those parts flew by relatively quickly...or maybe I just pressed the “next page” button faster, I dunno. Okay, so now let’s get into the review!

This was a, shall we call it welcomed diversion from the common YA or Adult Fiction that I’ve been reading a lot recently. Shadowborn takes place in a world that seems to come out of the Middle Ages, but it’s completely made up. The first couple of pages give a list of character names which is helpful because there are a lot of lords and dukes and people, but to be honest, who actually reads that? Well...I didn’t, maybe I’m the weird one. Anyway, but it was good to have it as a guide in the front.

The first chapter was definitely very interesting with the whole birthing scene and then Catwin’s mother throwing her out because: She was born to be betrayed. Oooo, the shivers and chills. It just sets a really great setting for the story, circling around a girl who was prophesied to be betrayed by someone.

Fast forward to Chapter 2 or 3, sorry I don’t remember exactly the order, Catwin’s older and seems to be really good a lurking in the shadows which fortunately or not, gets her noticed by the Duke’s Shadow aka his personal spy and assassin. He helps her get bumped up the ranks and she finds herself as the Lady Miriel’s new Shadow.

Little background info, the Duke is a hero from the previous war mentioned in the summary. He has a sister who is “ashamed” and exiled from court who has a daughter: Lady Miriel. Miriel’s mom is this nasty lady, but I kinda felt bad for her because the one sunshine of her life, her daughter, was being taken away from her by her hated brother. So, I think we can cut her some slack. Anyway, the Duke has a lot of enemies at court because he rose up ranks so quickly which means that Muriel will be a targeted figure when she makes her debut at court. This is where Catwin’s duty to protect her comes in.

The relationship between Catwin and Miriel is really bumpy. Miriel has spent her life mimicking her mother and has grew off the hatred her mother felt for the Duke who is now her guardian at court. So, she (Miriel) hates her life and hates (because of her Mother’s influence) that Catwin who was a street urchin back home is now supposed to be her most trusted confidant. Catwin, under the guidance of her foster mother, Roine, tries to befriend Miriel, but each attempt only seems to make their relationship worsen. Miriel has quickly become a “hot item” in court and she has her sights fixed on the Boy King Garad.

The plot twists a couple of times which helps move the story along. The ending is a great cliffhanger and brings the characters to a rounded point of development that makes you want to know what happen, but content, kinda, with what you have. Catwin has been trained and knows her duty as Miriel’s protector, whether the Lady should choose to accept her friendship of not. I think Miriel shows the greatest development with the formation of her own political beliefs and ideas. You start to see her form her own opinions and break away from being a puppet, essentially perfecting the art of a masquerade so to speak.

I would recommend this book, but to be perfectly honest, after a couple of days, I don’t have the insatiable urge to read the rest of the series as it didn’t make a lasting impact on me.

Sometimes, I think I was a child made of that swirling snow, borne of parents who faded into the mountains like ghosts after my birth, never to be seen again.

Do you know, I used to feel special, like I would wake up in a fairytale and be a great hero. But now…I don’t know if I want to be in a story anymore. It’s like I am already, and I don’t think I like it.

You, Catwin, no longer exist. You no longer have a fate of your own, a will of your own, or indeed a soul of your own. Henceforth, you and Miriel are to be as one, she the light, and you the shadow.

Dollhouse

Dollhouse by Anya Allan
ISBN: 1475034725
Pages: 293
Appearance:

Summary:
Six months ago, fifteen-year-old Cassie Claiborne reluctantly moved from her home in Florida with her social worker mom. In her new home--a remote, mountainous Australian town, Cassie meets new friends--Aisha Dumaj, Ethan McAllister and Lacey Dougherty.
For the first time, Cassie falls in love. The only problem is that the boy she falls for is her friend, Ethan--and he and Aisha are already an item. When Cassie goes on a school hike to Devils Hole with her new friends, she tries desperately to keep her feelings for Ethan secret. Aisha disappears on the hike without a trace--with the police believing she was murdered. When Cassie, Ethan and Lacey return to the mountains to search for Aisha--Cassie begins to realize she never really knew any of her friends. Everyone has their own secrets. She discovers the stranger lurking inside everyone she thought she knew. The darkest secret of all waits beneath the old mansion in the mountains--a secret from which there is no escape....

OMGEEEEEEEE! What is it with Kindle books and amazing first impressions lately? I have literally not been able to put this book down ever since I started reading. I even confess to be sneak reading in class. Dollhouse is eerily creepy but so freakishly addicting at the same time. 110% in love. Let me just want you, the ending, omgawds the ending will have you tearing your hair out in agony, but the good type. Let’s get into it!

First, the basics. Aisha and Ethan are dating. Cassie likes Ethan. Aisha suspects something. Aisha, Ethan, Cassie, and Lacey are on a mountain for a class photography project. Aisha, Ethan, and Cassie get into a fight. Aisha runs away. Ethan, Cassie, and Lacey can’t find Aisha. What do they do now?

Ahaha, sorry for that. That’s ↑ was just a summary of what happened in the first couple of chapters. Anyway, Ethan has now been accused of Aisha’s murder as he was the last to see her alive. In order to prove himself innocent, he heads towards the mountain to look for her. Cassie and Lacey decide to follow him after doing a bit of background research on the man who own the huge mansion in the middle of the forest, Henry. So they go look for Aisha by following Henry around and one day, find their way into the tunnel underneath Henry’s house. Do a bit more exploring, and they end up in this huge human sized dollhouse.

At first, they think it’s just dolls, but they soon realize that the dolls are actually girls. One, Cassie recognizes to be a girl who was reportedly kidnapped a couple of months ago. The dollhouse is run by this doll named Jessamine. They find a total of 4 other girls, including Aisha living in the dollhouse doing doll activities the whole day. Worst, Lacey disappeared and they don’t know where she went. I kinda laughed at this part because they were dumb enough to leave her alone in a dollhouse, but they were scared. They quickly notice that there is no way out and that time seems to tick backwards.

Cassie tries to escape a couple of times, but fails each time. Finally, she gets thrown into the “Dark Way” for punishment and gets mentally molested by Henry. Not like molested molested, but he scares her pretty bad. Then there’s this whole “revelation” where Cassie discovers who Jessamine truly is, she is...nope, not going to tell you. But it’s HUGE and pretty much sends Cassie on the brink of falling into insanity.

This story is just so addicting and creepy. Yes, very very creepy. By the end of the book, I was close to crying in despair. I wanted them to escape, they were so close to escaping! And Jessamine, she shows her true colors and all the insanity that is lurking around. The ending just ended me. Yup, I was done (in the good way). Now I really want to know what happens, but at the same time I’m so scared for what is going to happen. I don’t want them to dieeeee!

I'd do whatever he asked, even if I ended up wading in so deep I drowned myself.

Even those closest to you will seem to unleash a strange person when you least expect it, but in reality the strangeness was lurking in there all the time.

Study your eyeballs out, get a high stress job, get married, spit out a kid, get divorced, stress about everything, live out your life on antidepressants and too much coffee.

Emptiness is a place - an abandoned town - a bottomless hole.

You could make things up in your head and focus on them so much they become real, become fact, and control you.

I was relieved, not to feel it anymore. But at the same time, it was disturbing to have something so potent drain away like that.

Make your own chances. There's no time to wait for chances to come to you.

Enthralled (Part 1)

Enthralled by Combined Authors
ISBN: 978-0-06-201579-2
Pages: 443
Appearance:

Summary:
A journey may take hundreds of miles, or it may cover the distance between duty and desire.
Sixteen of today’s hottest writers of paranormal tales weave stories on a common theme of journeying. Authors such as Kelley Armstrong, Rachel Caine, and Melissa Marr return to the beloved worlds of their bestselling series, while others, like Claudia Gray, Kami Garcia, and Margaret Stohl, create new land-scapes and characters. But whether they’re writing about vampires, faeries, angels, or other magical beings, each author explores the strength and resilience of the human heart.

Hey guys! Welcome to my book review of Enthralled, a collection of paranormal short stories written by some of the “hottest” teen authors out there. Because everything’s divided into 16 different stories, I thought I’d share one or two sentences on each. So let’s get into it!

Wait, I lied. First, I just want to say that I’m not trying to offend anyone in any way, some stories just didn't make a good impression on me or confused me. I don’t know if the short is a spin-off from another series which might be why I’m not getting some of them, but I don’t know. If you do know, please let me know below and enlighten me! Also, because the book does contain 16 stories, so I’ll be breaking this up in half. So the reviews following this is part 1 and part 2 will be a separate blog post. Okay, NOW we’re going to get into the review.

Giovanni’s Farewell by Claudia Gray
Personal opinion and I’m not here to offend anyone, but this was not a good opening for the story. I was so confused on what was going on. So Cairo and Ravenna have special powers? And what’s up with Giovanni? He died from an accident at the ruins and hasn't been able to leave earth because before he died, he wished he could kiss a beautiful girl. That is WHY he’s still lurking around? On the brighter side, Ravenna and Cairo reconcile, the bond of twins.
Rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars

Scenic Route by Carrie Ryan
This was pretty, um, interesting. I was a bit confused as to what was going on, but then figured that it was set in another apocalyptic world. Sally and Margie are living in a house that is secluded from the world protecting them from the chaos outside. Then this guy comes, wins their trust, and then does a complete 360 betrayal on them. It was, how do we put it? Confusing.
Rating: 2 out of 5 stars

Red Run by Kami Garcia
This was the story that kept me reading this book. Edie is this girl driven with revenge. She wants to kill the ghost that haunts the Red Run because he killed her brother. Or so she thinks. It’s a really well woven story-line that gives you a historical background of the “cursed” Red Run while unfolding a story at the same time. The part where Edie was deciding to trust the man or Tommy I was literally jumping out of my seat screaming “Tommy!” Come on, who’d you trust? A ghost or a guy who lives alone in the middle of the forest smelling like marijuana? Pick the lesser of two evils.

Things About Love by Jackson Pearce
I thought this was a super clever and interesting twist on the whole concept of genies. Instead of viewing them as the grantor of 3 wishes, this story is about what the genie and human world are like after a genie fell in love. I know, horrifying. Genies aren't supposed to fall in love. It follows Lawrence, the main character who knows waaaay too much about the genie world and is assigned a genie to guard him every once in a while. His guard this time is Juliette, a relatively young genie with a big curiosity about love. She wants to figure out all about it. I just think it’s super cute and sweet. Juliette finds out that love isn't’t just about kissing and Lawrence finds love in an unexpected partner.
Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Niederwald by Rachel Vincent
This was very interesting. Ha, not a great way to start a review. I loved the twist on the original take of mythological beings. Sabine is a Nightmare, not so sure what that means. Emma’s human. And they’re currently in the middle of harpy territory. Sabine is in love with this kid named Nash and wants to find out if they will end up together by consulting Syrie, the bean sidhe (banshee) who is protected by Nea and her band of harpies. Wow, that was a mouthful of background info. To cut things short, they get into a fight and there’s some butt-kicking action. Definitely an interesting read.
Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Merely Mortal by Melissa Marr
To be 100% honest, my knowledge of the author is making me a bit biased. I absolutely hands down love Melissa Marr. They involve faeries and cool stuff! Yay! XD Okay, moving on. This is the story of Keenan and his beloved Donia. According the background info given, Keenan gave up his immortality and fae powers to save Donia who is now the Winter Queen. Donia now lives in constant fear that his mortality won’t be able to handle the power of the winter. Anyway, they go on this little “honeymoon” type vacation in the human world to just relax and forget about life and its troubles. Don’t want to give away too much, but it’s not as peaceful and free because something happens!!
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Facing Facts by Kelley Armstrong
Kelley Armstrong is another author that I really like. Again, I’m assuming this is a spin off from a book or series that she’s written because there is a lot of background info. There is some action Chloe and Derek chase a ghost around a mall before realizing that they’re chasing the wrong person. Then there’s this whole face off where Chloe finds some hidden strengthen within her and becomes confident. Yay!

Let’s Get this Undead Show On the Road by Sarah Rees Brennan
A bit confusing, especially the whole scene with the guy “kidnapping” the band members. So 4 the One is this boyband who is currently one of the hottest bands out there, their little specialty? One of their members is a vampire. To be honest, I got a bit annoyed when Faye did the whole talk about Christian (vampire) appealing to the girls because he has this air of loneliness. Just because he’s different? Argh, annoys me so much. But I admire Christian for his self control while being locked up with his bandmates because that shows he really cares about his friends and won’t let his bloodlust get control of him.
Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

"What made you trust me?"
"Your eyes," Edie answered. "The eyes don't lie."
"Even if you're a ghost?"
"Especially if you're a ghost." (Red Run)

Here are things I learned about love. It involves kissing. It changes you. It's never where you expect it. (Things About Love)

Everything I could want in eternity is possible because of you. (Merely Mortal)
Overall: 3 out of 5 stars
